Humble Beginnings

The Pickin’ Porch began as a dream Mike Clemmer had while working at a corporate job in Knoxville that wasn’t going well. He decided to quit and follow his dream, drawing on his talents as a musician and a dulcimer maker; in the final months of his job, he took three weeks of vacation and built five dulcimers. Fate led them to Wood-N-Strings’ predecessor, Wood-N-Things, located in the Nawger Nob Craft Settlement that had been in operation for 18 years when the owners decided not to re-open as the spring of 1996 rolled around. The Clemmers took over the lease, and Wood-N-Strings opened on June 1 of that year. The Pickin’ Porch grew off of Wood-N-Strings quite literally. The Clemmers approached the owner of their old building about building a combination porch and stage out front, and with the same determination they put into building up their business, they started a weekly night of performances that quickly caught on in popularity.
